The clock is ticking down for parties to reach a final cleanup agreement for Anaconda’s Superfund site. 

Update 5:45 p.m.

Fire mangers report little activity on the Bacon Rind Fire burning near Big Sky on the Gallatin National Forest. New flights show the fire at 393 acres, up  from around 340 acres yesterday, according to the fire's public information officer. Crews are monitoring the fire with an eye on forecasts calling for continued hot, dry weather. Mangers are working on plans for fighting the fire if it moves closer to Highway 191. 

Montana Health Providers Cheer Budget Restorations, But Say Damage Is Done

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana health service organizations that eliminated staff and services amid state budget cuts cheered Thursday after Gov. Steve Bullock announced that funding will be partially restored, but they say that long-term damage already has been done.

A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of an environmental group challenging a timber and forest thinning project in the Kootenai National Forest.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that that Forest Service, “acted arbitrarily and capriciously,” by failing to determine whether the East Reservoir Project will result in new roads that will exceed a cap on them meant to preserve grizzly bear habitat.
